The next phase of the scheme includes 206 new homes, new shops and a community hall. The 10 year project also includes the retention of 29 of the existing houses and demolition of all of the remaining properties within the site.
“This phase of the regeneration will again deliver much better quality housing to central Basildon and improve the landscape of the area dramatically," said Councillor Frank Tomlin, Basildon Council’s cabinet member for housing.
The application was submitted in order to refresh the architectural and design elements of the Craylands project. It sets a benchmark for how the regenerated Craylands estate will look, the Council said.
Plans for the overall project include 1,310 homes, including 634 on Craylands and 676 on the nearby former Fryerns School site.
"It’s good news that the plan has been accepted by Basildon Borough Council. It affects how the newly regenerated estate will look and feel for residents," said Mark Thompson, deputy chief executive of Swan Housing Association.
“The Craylands regeneration is a long term project and it is important that the plans that we have in place remain relevant and adaptable in order to deliver the sustainable regeneration of the area,” said Thompson.
The development will be a mix of private and social housing consisting of flats and houses with some Victorian architectural influences.
