Plans for 1,000-home Folkestone redevelopment given green light

Shepway District Council has resolved to grant outline planning permission to the Folkestone Harbour Company (FHC) for a major mixed-use regeneration at a 23-hectare site on Folkestone's seafront in Kent.

The masterplan for the project, drawn up by architect Terry Farrell, includes the building of up to 1,000 houses as well as new public spaces and leisure facilities. FHC said in a statement that the scheme would make a "major contribution to the attractiveness of Folkestone as a successful place where people can live, work and bring up their children".

Council Leader David Monk welcomed the decision and said that it was the "right one" for the town and the district. "It is a decision that demonstrates the council's support for a development that will enhance the town and bring benefits to residents and visitors," he said.

"We have already seen what some of the most recent investments in the harbour, such as Rocksalt, have done to increase visitor numbers. However, this application is so much greater than the sum of its parts. It has the potential to be truly transformational, a key part in the regeneration of the town that supports the development of the Creative Quarter, brings more people and money into our town centre, and increases investor awareness of what a special place Folkestone is," Monk added.

FHC said that the next stage in the process would be to secure interest from potential developers.
