Southwark Council's planning committee this week resolved to grant planning permission for housing-led schemes at Borough High Street and Blackfriars Road in London's SE1.

The committee followed the Council's planning officers' recommendation to approve proposals for the redevelopment of office block Brandon House at 180 Borough High Street to create a new eight storey building to comprise 100 homes as well as a mews house building to comprise four new homes. The scheme will provide 20 affordable homes

The development will also comprise an office building as well as shops and a new pedestrianised route to link Borough High Street and Disney Place. The planning officers said in the committee report that the scheme would provide an opportunity to provide new office and retail space as well as good quality homes "in line with current policy objectives".

The officers said that, although the scheme's 20% affordable housing provision was below the 35% required by local policy, the developer had "adequately demonstrated" that the scheme could not support a higher provision. They proposed to agree a review mechanism to re-appraise the scheme's viability following a 24-month period.

The committee also backed proposals by developer Linden Homes to build a new building at 169-173 Blackfriars Road to comprise 73 flats, including 17 affordable homes, and five shops.
