Southwark gives green light to 1,000-home Canada Water proposals

Plans by Sellar Design & Developments for a major residential-led scheme in London's Canada Water area are set to go ahead after Southwark Council's planning committee this week resolved to grant planning permission for the proposals.

Five new buildings would be built at Surrey Quays Road under the plans. These include a 40-storey tower, to comprise more than 1,000 new homes as well as 12,308sq m of retail space, 2,800 sq m of office space, a health centre, a cinema and new public amenity spaces including a public square. 231 of the new homes will be affordable.

The site is identified for development in Southwark Council's Canada Water Area Action Plan, which was adopted in March last year. The scheme forms part of a wider regeneration of the Canada Water area which also includes a 40-acre development by British Land.

"The new homes, with their bold and exciting architecture will replace the lifeless, out-of town, retail-park look the area is associated with," said the Council's cabinet member for regeneration and planning Fiona Colley in a statement. "This approval will help to realise the vision of the area action plan to create a new heart for Rotherhithe," she said.
