In 2011 part of the Alconbury Airfield site was selected as one of the new wave of Enterprise Zones following the submission of proposals by the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to the Government.
Tim Leathes, project director at Urban & Civic, said: "The application embraces the Local Enterprise Partnership’s aspirations for the Enterprise Zone and provides further leverage to maximise economic, social and environmental benefits, not just for the local area but for the wider region too".
"This application is not about setting out the detail of every house and park, it is about setting parameters and limits for the development of the site," he said.
The developer stated that its proposals reflect the feedback it received from 2,500 people at a design enquiry event that was held last year, as well as extensive wildlife surveys, transport investigations and the outcome of numerous meetings with stakeholders and the local community.
"The future of this strategic site is of huge importance to Huntingdonshire and the wider region," said Jason Ablewhite, the leader of the Council. "Urban & Civic have opened up a new chapter for the former airfield and this is clearly a pivotal moment. It will, hopefully, put behind us the previous unsatisfactory ideas for the site’s future and realise the great potential it offers."
Views are now being sought on the proposals online or at a number of public consultation drop-in sessions which have been scheduled for September.
