Warwick District Council plans on 'garden suburbs' to meet future housing need

Warwick District Council has made plans for 10,800 new homes to be built in its area between 2011 and 2029. The Council intends for the majority of the new development to take place in what it is terming "garden suburbs and villages".

The plans are set out in the Council's Local Plan Preferred Options Document (Plan).

The Council is planning for new garden suburbs and villages in Warwick, Leamington Spa and Kenilworth. The Plan distributes new development across the edge of towns and main settlements, including a significant proportion of greenfield sites due to the very limited availability of brownfield sites within the district.

"The Council wishes, by 2029, that the district will be known as a place for its ‘Sustainable Garden towns, suburbs and villages’, with the appropriate infrastructure and design codes in place to support this principle" said the Plan.

The Council has produced a garden suburbs and villages 'prospectus' to show how the overarching garden suburbs  principles could apply to the existing towns, parts of which already demonstrate the advantages of tree lined streets, appropriate housing density, suitable vehicle parking facilities and increased plot sizes.

The plan is out for public consultation during June and July 2012.
