Westminster residents back £200m regeneration scheme


Residents in the London Borough of Westminster have voted in favour of redevelopment proposals for the Ebury Bridge Estate in Pimlico and Church Street in Marylebone as part of the Council's housing renewal programme.

The renewal plans for the Ebury Bridge Estate include the refurbishment of existing council housing as well as the construction of new homes to provide residents with new, high quality homes. The scheme also includes improvements to public space and community facilities in the area as well as new job opportunities.

The Ebury Bridge referendum had a turnout of 60% of residents, with 78% voting in favour of the proposals.

At Church Street, plans include the construction of new homes, a new community and health centre and new enclosed play and sports facilities. A covered market square will be part of improvements to Church Street Market and new business start-up spaces will be created. The Council said 300 jobs and 100 apprenticeships will be made available to local people.

25% of the Church Street residents voted in the referendum and 87% of those were in favour of the plans.

“This vote represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to revive these areas and to build much-needed new homes, to improve our existing housing stock, to create hundreds of new jobs, new community facilities and improve the public realm of these areas," said the Council's cabinet member for housing Jonathan Glanz in a statement ahead of the referendums.

“We have been committed to working very closely with residents in drawing up these plans for regeneration and it is only right that they should now have the final say on whether the plans move ahead," he said.

The plans will go before Council later in the year. The Council also said it will hold referendums later this year for projects in Westbourne Green and Paddington Green which are also part of its housing renewal programme.
