Pinsent Masons advises on project to build integrated solar and battery storage facility in the Philippines

Multinational law firm Pinsent Masons has advised Terra Solar Philippines Inc as the developer of the Terra Solar Project, which when completed will be one of the largest integrated renewable energy and storage projects in the world.

The Terra Solar Project, situated about 100km from the Philippines capital of Manila, will comprise a 3.5GW-peak of solar photovoltaic capacity, complemented by a 4.5GWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

The completed project will provide electricity to almost 2.4 million Philippine households and eliminate 4.3 million tons of carbon emissions annually.

The project is backed by a 20-year, 850MW (for 13-hours daily on average) power supply agreement with Meralco, the Philippines’ largest distribution utility. It will also support economic development, creating more than 10,000 new jobs, and facilitating local development.

The Pinsent Masons team was led by Hong Kong-based partner Bernard Ang and included legal director Isabelle Chan, special counsel Leanne Olden, associate Zita Chan and paralegal Jason Wong.

Commenting on the matter, Bernard Ang said: ‘We are very pleased to have supported Terra Solar Philippines on this landmark project for both the Philippines but also for the global move towards a more sustainable approach to energy production and storage.’

‘We are also proud to have been involved in another significant infrastructure project in the Philippines, having worked on a range of energy and infrastructure projects, including the financing of the redevelopment of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila. Our involvement has seen us recently recognised as the International Law Firm of the Year in the Philippines by Asian Legal Business and ranked as a Tier 1 foreign firm by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2024.’
