Supporting your child’s interests is one of the more rewarding parts of parenthood. For me, that means being involved in my 9-year-old son’s basketball journey - driving to practices, watching games, and helping him improve his skills at home. It’s a routine built on consistency, patience, and purpose. And, unexpectedly, it’s given me a fresh perspective on my work in Managed Legal Services.
Consistency matters
Basketball, like legal delivery, relies on consistency. Whether it’s helping my son refine his free throws or guiding a client through a complex transaction, progress comes from showing up and doing the work. There are no shortcuts - just steady effort and resilience.
Preparation makes the difference
After each match, my son and I talk through what went well, what could improve, and what to focus on next. In legal transformation, the same principles apply. Understanding the landscape, anticipating challenges, and aligning with stakeholders are all part of setting up for success. Preparation isn’t just helpful - it’s essential.
Coaching on and off the court
At home, I encourage my son to stay focused, learn from mistakes, and recognise small wins. At work, I do the same through mentoring colleagues, supporting clients through change, and helping teams navigate uncertainty. Coaching isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about helping others build capability and confidence.
Trust builds progress
Whether on the court or in the office, trust is what makes progress possible. It’s the quiet, consistent support behind the scenes that helps others perform at their best. Being present, being reliable, and believing in someone’s potential- these are the things that make a lasting impact.
Supporting my son’s basketball hobby has reminded me that the values we practise at home - commitment, preparation, encouragement - are just as relevant in professional life. In Managed Legal Services, those same principles help build strong teams, deliver meaningful change, and create space for others to thrive.
