The City of London Corporation is considering proposals to close two of the roads that run through the junction outside the Bank of England to help accommodate the rising numbers of pedestrians.
The plans, known as the Bank Area Strategy, propose increasing the pedestrian areas, opening up some of the narrow adjoining roads, creating more green spaces and replacing one of the junctions.
“London’s unique selling point is its environment and its history but at the moment you can’t see any of that without being almost run over,” Victor Callister of the Corporation’s Department of the Built Environment told the Financial Times.
City A.M. reported that The City of London Corporation was close to finalising its plans, which will then go to the planning and transportation committee to be voted on by its members.
Planning is anticipated to start in November, with an aim to complete the scheme by 2018 at a cost of up to £10 million.
