Westminster City Council has resolved to grant permission to developer CORE for its mixed-use redevelopment of Communications House at 48 Leicester Square in London's West End.

Plans for the scheme include part demolition and reconstruction of the existing building on the site behind retained facades to provide a nine storey building to comprise 90,000 square feet of offices as well as shops and restaurants.

The existing building is a full island block, which covers the whole of the west site of the square. The plans for the redevelopment have been designed by Make Architects.

"We are very pleased to be pressing ahead with this exciting project,
a landmark in the area, and part of the transformation of this part of the West End," said CORE director David Ainsworth in a statement.

“It’s fabulous to learn that the committee has given the go-ahead to our
proposals for 48 Leicester Square," said Make Architects partner Frank Filskow.

“We have designed a scheme to create a contemporary building in a sensitive and appropriate manner. It will continue the theme of wider regeneration in and around Leicester Square, begun with the new public realm work. It is a fantastic project and we are excited to be taking it forward,” Filskow said.

Work on the site is expected to start this year.
