Consortium chosen for £100m council regeneration plans

Manchester Council has made an official agreement with the consortium S4B (Solutions 4 Brunswick) to deliver a regeneration project in Brunswick.

The planning application for the project was approved by the Planning and Highways Committee of Manchester City Council on 30 May 2013, which said that "the redevelopment of this site with a quality development will bring forward major environmental and regeneration benefits to the neighbourhood".

The contract to carry out the project was signed on 17 December by Manchester Council and the consortium specifically created for the development, comprising Galliford Try, Equitix, Contour Homes and Mears.

The 25 year old project, which will cost £100 million, includes the development of over 500 new family homes: approximately 300 homes for sale and 200 council homes. In addition, the proposal includes plans for a new retail area, a new neighbourhood office, a day-care centre and a 60-bed sheltered accommodation facility. It is expected that building works will begin in summer 2014, with the council homes expected to be ready for tenants by spring 2015, and the first homes for sale by summer 2015.

The regeneration plans will also result in an enhancement of Gartside Gardens in Manchester, new road links, a new community allotment area and a new play area on Glenbarry Close. 650 existing council homes will also be refurbished.

"Contracting S4B official to the Brunswick PFI scheme marks the end of a long journey for local residents who have waited many years for their regeneration plans to become a reality," said Nigel Murphy, executive member for housing and regeneration for Manchester Council.."But this milestone also marks the beginning of an exciting chapter for the community who are looking forward to a much welcomed transformation of their neighbourhood".

The new homes that will be built as part of the 25-year regeneration plans and represent a response to delivery Manchester's residential growth strategy, have been welcome by the Brunswick Tenants and Residents Association.
