The Greater London Authority (GLA) is contemplating giving grants to housing associations to build a third of their properties at social rent, according to a report from Inside Housing .

The GLA is apparently concerned about high housing costs in London and is therefore considering introducing the funding for new homes at social rent in the 2015/18 affordable homes programme.

Currently the £1.8 million affordable homes programme grant from the government is received only with respect to affordable rented homes.

Whilst the GLA has confirmed that the proposal has been discussed at a meeting, it stated that details have not been finalised.  The chief executive of housing association Affinity Sutton, Keith Exford, said: "As I understand it, what the GLA is looking at is a sort of blended programme, which has some low-cost homeownership, some affordable renting and some social renting."

The chief executive of another London housing association was reported as having said that the proposals could result in a third of the new homes under the programme being "similar to social rent, maybe social rent plus 10%", with the remaining two thirds being affordable rent and shared ownership.
