The approved proposals include the construction of 196 new homes, a cinema, shops, restaurants and cafes as well as new offices for the council and a new town square. The scheme will be carried out by the Council's development partner King Street Developments Hammersmith, a joint venture between Helical Bar and Grainger.
The Council said in a statement that the new council office building is expected to save around £150,000 in reduced energy costs.
Under the plans the developers will provide £5.25 million towards a regeneration fund aimed at boosting the surrounding area, including a refurbishment of the Grade II listed Town Hall, which was built in 1938. The plans for the scheme were revised last year to ensure that the height of the development would not exceed the height of the existing Town Hall extension.
“We listened to residents and ditched the less popular elements of the previous scheme and I now believe we have a scheme that Hammersmith can be proud of," said Council leader Nicholas Botterill in a statement. "It’s been hard work but we finally have a plan that will kick start the much needed regeneration of the west end of King Street. The developers can now get on with the important work of breathing new life into this rather rundown area.”
Final approval of the plans is subject to referral to the Mayor of London.
