Peel submitted planning application for £650 m Chatham Waters development

Developer, Peel Land & Property has submitted an outline planning application for a £650 million mixed use development of Chatham Docks to Medway Council.

The proposed 'Chatham Waters' development includes the regeneration of 26 acres of brownfield land. Plans include offices, a hotel, housing and supporting educational, retail and landscaped public areas.

The scheme is proposed to be an employment-led development including around 1.9 million square foot of space. Proposals include a "commercial heart" incorporating office space, education facilities, an "EventCity" and a hotel. The scheme is supported by £1 billion of private investment.

Plans also include the provision of a hotel, which will be sited alongside a series of apartments and townhouses. The development will be supported with landscaped public areas and a foodstore and is expected to create in the region on 3,500 new jobs for the area.

Peel Land & Property held a public consultation in September to show its plans for the redevelopment to the local community and gauge local opinion. The consultation revealed that 90% of those questioned were in support of the scheme and 95% were assured that the scheme would give the area a boost.

The scheme supports the council’s objectives in its Local Development Framework and will help align the policy objectives for the Medway Unitary Authority and the wider Thames Gateway region, the developer said.
