A planning inspector has adjourned an examination hearing of Waverley Borough Council's core strategy and cancelled further scheduled hearings this month over concerns that the Council has not followed its duty to cooperate.

The Council said in a statement that, following the first examination hearing this week, the inspector had adjourned the hearing and said that the remaining sessions due this month would not take place.

The inspector had said that he would write a letter to the Council to set out whether he was satisfied that the Council had complied with its duty to cooperate with neighbouring councils during the preparation of the core strategy.

The inspector had further noted that, even if he found that the duty to cooperate had been complied with, there may be further areas where he would like the Council to carry out additional work.

According to Planning Magazine, the Council's head of planning had said that the inspector had made it clear that he was also concerned that the Council's housing evidence base, including a housing market assessment from 2009, was not up to date.

The Council said the inspector had told it that he hoped to send it his letter next week.
