Countryside Properties picked for £150m Ponders End neighbourhood redevelopment

Enfield Council has selected Countryside Properties as its preferred developer to carry out a regeneration scheme at the 1960's Alma Estate in north London's Ponders End.

Under the scheme, the 717-home estate will be redeveloped to provide 800 new homes including council-owned and private as well as shared ownership homes which will be owned by Newlon Housing Trust. The plans for the improved neighbourhood also include replacement shops and new community facilities and play spaces.

The plans are part of the Council's wider regeneration of Ponders End under which a new school and upgrades to transport and a nearby park have already been completed.

“This £150 million investment will revive this part of Enfield, providing first class affordable family homes and state of the art facilities," said Enfield Council's cabinet member for housing Ahmet Oykener in a statement.

“The appointment of Countryside Properties takes us a big step forward towards rebuilding the estate; creating a greener, safer and brighter neighbourhood. Our vision is to significantly improve Ponders End and strengthen the sense of community so that it becomes one of the most family friendly and desirable places to live in London. We’re well on the way to achieving that goal, and the redevelopment of the Alma Estate is a vital element to achieving our vision,” Oykener said.

Construction on the site is due to begin in the autumn 2014.
