The planning application for the stadium's redevelopment was approved on 2 February by Barnet's planning and environment committee. Mayor of London Boris Johnson confirmed that he did not wish to intervene in the decision-making process and Barnet is expect to issue the planning permission shortly.
The proposed redevelopment of the stadium includes the refurbishment of the existing site and the construction of a new permanent stand that will be used by spectators of athletics meetings and rugby matches.
The new stands will have covered seating and create capacity for approximately 3,000 spectators.
“We are obviously delighted that the Secretary of State has confirmed that our planning application can be determined at local level, in line with the spirit of localism. We now hope that the formal decision will be issued by Barnet Council over the coming days," said Nigel Wray, chairman of Saracens.
During the rugby season, the plans are to increase the stadium capacity to approximately 10,000, including seats and standing areas. The increase capacity did attract concern from some, who feared increased traffic and a lack of sufficient parking.
The plans were revised and a new transport plan was developed, which reduced the percentage of supporters travelling to the stadium by car by 36%.
“We have engaged with local residents throughout the life of this project and we will continue to do so as we move forward. We want to provide a facility that the whole community can be proud of," said Wray.
