Tower Hamlets approves Whitechapel boutique hotel

Tower Hamlets Council has granted planning permission to Union Hanover Securities and Southern Grove for a 217-bedroom hotel at 45 Whitechapel Road in London's E1.

Under the plans the existing office building at Black Lion House will be refurbished and converted into a 11,537 square metre hotel which will become the flagship for new extended stay hotel concept Urban Villa.

The developer said in the planning statement submitted with the application that the scheme would "transform the appearance of an unattractive and monolithic building to create a high quality modern scheme that is more sympathetic to its surroundings".

Union Hanover director Andrew Fowler said that the scheme would "personify" the company's design-led brand. He said it was looking to open further properties at locations including Southwark, Camden, Hackney, Brixton and Bethnal Green.

Work onsite is expected to begin next summer.
