Richard's experience

  • Advising on the Cory Decarbonisation Project, involving installation of carbon capture equipment to the existing Riverside EfW and the soon-to-be-built Riverside 2 EfW. We continue to lead on consenting strategy, including a successful section 35 Direction bringing the project into the DCO regime, and advise on complex issues including protected land, marine impacts, and application drafting.

  • Advising on the ‘Cory Decarbonisation Project’, a project made up of the installation of carbon capture equipment to the existing Riverside Energy from Waste (EfW) project and the soon-to-be-built Riverside 2 EfW project, in relation to which we previously advised Cory on its successful application for development consent (2020).

  • Advised on the promoter seeking development consent for Sunnica Solar Farm, a circa 500MW solar farm with battery storage and grid connection in Cambridgeshire / Suffolk.

  • Advising DPL on its Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) project. We are advising DPL on all planning and environmental matters relating to the BECCS project. BECCS involves the utilisation of biomass as an energy source and the capture and permanent storage of CO2 produced during the conversion of the biomass to electricity.

  • Advising Southampton International Airport on its planning application to expand the airport. We are advising on all planning matters relating to its runway extension to enable the Airport to accommodate larger planes. This is a particularly important application given the collapse of FlyBe in 2020, which made up nearly 90% of the Airport's flights.

  • Advised DPL on the defence of a judicial review claim in the High Court and the Court of Appeal regarding the grant of the Drax Power Development Consent Order (DCO). Following the grant of the DCO for, what would be, the UK’s largest new Carbon Capture Ready gas-fired generating station at 3.6GW with 200MW of battery storage, ClientEarth challenged the DCO on 9 Grounds in the High Court in April 2020

  • Advised Cory Environmental on the proposed new Riverside Energy Park, involving a mix of generating assets from energy from waste, battery and solar. Advised on all planning matters from inception through to obtaining the necessary consents.

  • Advising on proposed new Riverside Energy Park, involving a mix of generating assets from energy to waste, battery and solar. Advising on all planning matters from inception through to obtaining the necessary consents.

  • Advised the Olympic Delivery Authority (and now London Legacy Development Corporation) on all planning matters relating to the 2012 Olympic Park and the legacy to the Olympic Park. Negotiating the necessary conditions and legal agreements for the consents, including representing the ODA/LLDC at Planning Committee.

  • Advised Drax Power Limited on proposed repowering of two existing units from coal-fired to gas-fired, together with integral battery storage including all planning and regulatory matters for this Nationally Significant Infrastructure project.
