The new Directive on the protection of personal data and privacy in the electronic communications sector came into force on 31st July 2002. However, provisions of the Directive on data retention have again been called into question as plans by the Danish Presidency are revealed that go one step further.
Member States have until 31st October 2003 to implement the new Directive in their national laws. The Directive also introduces new rules on spam and cookies.
