Mayor of London is set to intervene in affordable homes dispute

London Mayor Boris Johnson will intervene to object to the London Borough of Islington's rejection of funding from the Government's Affordable Homes Programme, according to reports.

Building magazine has said that Johnson will object when the Planning Inspectorate conducts its examination of the decision. One possibility is that he will claim that the decision conflicts with the London Plan (the Strategic Development Plan for London) and national policy, the report said.

London Borough of Islington's cabinet decided. last week to reject funding from the Government's £1.8 billion Affordable Homes Programme. The aim of the funding programme is to provide developers with limited amounts of funding to support the delivery of new homes below market rent.

The London Borough justified its action citing the practical delivery of affordable homes as the reason behind the cabinet's decision. It reasoned that the Government programme would not lead to the development of "truly affordable homes".

Islington has pledged to £2.5m of its own funds for housing associations to deliver 61 new homes over the course of the next two years at an acceptable social rent set at 30-35 percent of market rent.
