The European Commission is seeking bidders interested in acting as the registry for the forthcoming .eu top level domain. The successful party will control the single database of all domain names ending in .eu. However, it must be a non-profit organisation, although it does not need to be established at the time that interest is expressed.

Applications must be made by 25th October 2002 by suitable organisations which must be formed within an EU Member State. According to the “Call for Expressions of Interest” document, the “selection procedure is based on an open call, and on principles of objectivity, non-discrimination and transparency.”

The registry will not also be allowed to act as a registrar, so other businesses will need to be authorised to sell the new domain names.
