The London Borough of Southwark's planning committee has resolved to grant planning permission for a mixed-use redevelopment of a 4.5 hectare former factory site at Clements Road in Bermondsey.

The approval includes full planning permission for the demolition of the existing buildings on the site and the construction of a new residential building reaching up to nine storeys in height and comprising 119 new flats, of which 26% would be affordable.

The committee also resolved to grant outline planning permission for a further number of buildings to comprise up to 681 new homes, including 26% affordable homes, as well as 73,000 square metres of commercial space. This part of the scheme will be delivered over five phases.

The Council's head of development management said in the committee report (51-page / 378KB PDF) that the proposals were "welcomed and supported" and that they would generate economic benefits for the local and wider area.

The report said that, as well as making a "significant" contribution to the Council's housing target, the mix of uses provided would contribute to urban regeneration, including helping to increase the viability of the nearby shopping centre, The Blue.

The scheme will be carried out by business space provider Workspace Group.
