TRUSTe announced this week that it has become the first privacy certification group to launch a European Union Safe Harbour Privacy Program. TRUSTe says this represents a move to globalise privacy protection and alternative dispute resolution.

By joining the TRUSTe EU Safe Harbour Privacy Seal program and fully complying with the license agreement, the organisation says that US companies fulfil “many” of the requirements needed to self-certify to the Department of Commerce that they are safe harbour compliant and can continue to receive personal data from the EU without interruptions.

TRUSTe also unveiled a new privacy seal for companies that receive TRUSTe EU Safe Harbor certification.

As part of the EU Safe Harbor Privacy program, TRUSTe will be offering services for companies that need to fulfil the adequacy requirement of the EU Data Protection Directive that places restrictions on US companies receiving personal data relating to European citizens.

As a requirement for companies to meet the safe harbour privacy framework, TRUSTe will provide an alternative dispute resolution mechanism for web based and off-line privacy-related disputes. TRUSTe also announced that it has self-certified to the Department of Commerce that it is, itself, compliant with the Safe Harbour Privacy Framework as set out by the US Department of Commerce.
