Scottish games company VIS Entertainment plc has entered into a joint venture deal with the second largest cable company in the UK, Telewest Communications, to develop entertainment content for broadband and interactive television.

The 50-50 joint venture will be called VIS iTV. VIS and Telewest will each provide £2 million in funding to create the first product for broadband and digital television channels. VIS CEO Chris van der Kuyl said no rivals had matched investment on this level to develop games for the channels.

Van der Kuyl said: “I firmly believe appliances are the way forward for the games industry and set top boxes will become ubiquitous.”

Tom Cotter, games content manager of Telewest, said: “The world is looking to the games fraternity to beat the shortest path to compelling broadband interactivity.”
