A joint venture between British Land and Blackstone has submitted a planning application for Broadgate in the City of London, to improve the retail and leisure facilities.

The joint venture plans on improving the shops and restaurants at the famous City office complex; increasing the space available for sport and performance in the circle and allowing events to be held.

The application includes plans for up to seven new food and retail units on the lower ground level, which would be arranged around the performance space. Six new kiosks are also planned for ground level, two of which would lead up to the first floor terraces.

The basement level allows a number of the lower ground units to spread over two interconnected levels and also accommodate new leisure uses such as bespoke health and fitness.

English Heritage has confirmed that the proposals would safeguard the architectural significance of the structure and would gain their support.

“The proposals for Broadgate Circle are designed to enhance the public amenity and structure at the heart of Broadgate, whilst preserving its essential character.  It represents a significant investment and improvement in the public realm to create a much livelier and active social and civic space," said Tim Roberts of British Land. "The stronger retail element will allow more people to linger and enjoy and interact with the space and performances and activities in the Circle.”
