The plans include the redevelopment of existing buildings on the site to provide ten new blocks. One will be a 20-storey residential tower and the rest will be mixed-use blocks reaching between three and seven storeys in height. The new blocks will comprise a total of 265 new homes, of which 124 will be affordable, as well as shops and community space on the ground floor of the tower and a new energy centre.
The Council appointed PRP architects to work with it on the plans for the project in June 2010.
Maiden Lane Estate is identified as an opportunity for estate regeneration in the Council's Community Investment Programme (CIP), which sets out a 15-year plan to invest money in schools, homes and community facilities. The site is also identified in the Kings Cross Place Plan as an area in need of regeneration.
The Council said in the CIP that a "key outcome" of this redevelopment will be access to high quality Council homes for new and existing Camden tenants and also a significant improvement to the public realm on York Way and the areas of the estate immediately behind the frontage.
