Hackney Council's planning sub-committee has resolved to grant planning permission to Lirastar for its Shoreditch Village mixed-use project in London's E1.

The 150,000 square feet scheme on the site of a car park opposite Shoreditch High Street station will comprise seven new buildings providing a covered market with 42,000 sq ft of shops and restaurants. The buildings will also have offices, a 185-bedroom hotel and eight new homes.

The centre of the site will comprise a new public open space, to be known as Holywell Court, which will have range of market activities including ten permanent kiosks and capacity for around 25 table top market stalls. The grade II listed building at 187 Shoreditch High Street will be refurbished as part of the plans.

EllisMiller, the architect behind the scheme, said in a statement that the proposals, which were submitted to the Council in January had received "overwhelming" support from statutory and local groups, including English Heritage, OPEN Shoreditch, and Transport for London.

“We’re delighted to have secured planning for Shoreditch Village on one of London’s most challenging and high profile sites," said EllisMiller partner Christ Patience. "We’re particularly pleased to receive an approval in such a short period of time with the overwhelming support of local and statutory groups. Shoreditch will now have a fantastic new public space with a lively mix of uses which will ensure its long-term social and commercial success,” he added.

Work on the site is expected to start early next year and to complete in 2015.
