Olympic Park Legacy Company submit 5000 page planning application

The Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) has submitted plans for the delivery of the next stage of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, including proposals for five new villages and up to 8,000 new homes to be built over 20 years.

Under the plans, called the Legacy Community Scheme (LCS), the Park will include up to 8,000 new homes, with 6,800 included in the LCS and the remainder to be sited within the Olympic Village. In line with the London Plan, 35% of the homes will be affordable housing.

Included in the plans are plazas, canal paths, roof gardens, cycle paths and 29 playgrounds, for use by surrounding communities in a bid to ensure that the Legacy fits in with the local area.

Three new schools, two primaries and a secondary, will be built along with Chobham Academy, which sits just next to the Olympic Village and will open in September 2013.

“This is an important step...that will revolutionise the face of East London and deliver a lasting legacy for the capital. It will be the most important regeneration project that the city has seen in 25 years.” said Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

In total the Legacy is expected to provide 14,400 jobs, coming from the construction work, the 130,000 square metre employment space and other venues and programming on the park.

Other amenities include nine nurseries, three health centres and 12 multi-purpose community spaces, which could be community centres, libraries and gyms.

The five new neighbourhoods will open in phases to the public from 2013, with families moving into the first new homes in 2015.

Planning applications for the rest of the Park, including the areas around the venues and north and south parkland, will be heard at later dates.

The Planning Decisions Team at the Olympic Delivery Authority will undertake a statutory consultation on the application between 5th October and 14th November. They will then consider the application, with a determination date expected summer 2012.
