Plans submitted for 1,200 home scheme in Doncaster

Landowner Haworth Estates has submitted a planning application for the redevelopment and regeneration of a former colliery in Rossington, Doncaster.

The colliery has been vacant since its closure and demolition in 2007 and the submission of this outline planning application follows a recent application for a new road scheme, FARRRS (Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme) and the approval of a new inland port to the west of the site.

Plans for the new development include proposals for up to 1,200 new homes, a local foodstore, community building, hotel, restaurant and land for a new primary school. The scheme will also provide children's play space and access to new public open space provided on the restored spoil heap land to the south.

"The proposal forms an integral part of the regeneration plans for Rossington and the wider area, with a link road from the new FARRRS road to Rossington passing through the colliery site and transforming the access to and from the village with Doncaster and the motorway," the developer said.

The spoil heap will be restored following a recent coal washing and recycling project being undertaken by Recycoal which has recently been granted planning permission.

It is hoped that the scheme will provide a major catalyst for regeneration and investment within the area and the Doncaster Borough as a whole, and is consistent with the Council's requirements for housing development over the next 15 years.

A decision is anticipated on the application in summer 2012, with the initial works on the site clean-up and road link expected to start before the end of the year.
