A joint venture between developer Stanhope and its investment partner Benson Elliot has submitted a planning application to Reading Borough Council for a major redevelopment of the area outside Reading Station.

Under the proposals the area will be regenerated to create four office buildings reaching up to 20 storeys as well as 300 new apartments, shops and a public square. Stanhope said that it plans to create a temporary event space outside the station during construction for cultural and entertainment events.

The developer said that it had consulted "extensively" with local residents, business owners and council representatives on the plans. It said that over 95% respondents supported that the area was in need of regeneration.

"This application is the culmination of a considerable amount of consultation with Reading Borough Council as well as the promoters of the neighbouring Thames Tower," said Stanhope development director Jason Margrave in a statement.

"The designs we have submitted have been widely supported by the public and we believe they will considerably transform this part of the town, building on the significant investment currently taking place at the station," Margrave said.

"Following consultation, we have included an enlarged public open space in the heart of the scheme, improved the retail offer and incorporated more public art," he said.

Stanhope said that it expects the Council to decide the application later in the year. If approved, work on the scheme is planned to start next year.
