The proposals for the 15 acre site include the construction of up to 1,800 new homes, including affordable homes, as well as a site for a new six form entry secondary school, more than 20,000 square metres of commercial space and new pedestrian routes. St George said in a statement it expected the scheme to deliver up to 1,200 new jobs.
A number of the new homes would be comprised within a landmark residential building and the Grade II listed Pennington Street Warehouse within the development site will be redeveloped into cafes, restaurants and small offices.
2.7 hectare of the scheme will comprise open space, including a new civic square which will host events throughout the year, a new Quayside street, market gardens, water gardens as well as a 375 metre promenade to the south of the site.
St George bought the site in May last year and has since consulted on its plans with the local community and stakeholders. It said that its proposals aim to "break up the barriers posed by the former Fortress Wapping into a distinctive masterplan" and that the design for the development had been inspired by "the heritage of the historic London Dock in Wapping".
“We are grateful for the very constructive and positive input we have had from local people and I believe we have an exceptional proposal for London Dock," said St George managing director Nick Hutchings. "Our plans will provide high quality homes together with much needed jobs and land for a new secondary school”.
The application is expected to be determined by the Council later this year and St George said it hopes to start the first phase of the development in 2014. The full scheme is expected to take up to 15 years to complete.
